COSCO has been focusing on the development of container terminals and the research on terminal investment strategies since late 1980s, while gradually taking a role in terminal investment. To meet the changes in the world shipping market and the need of business development, COSCO has increasingly emphasized the terminal operation, which has become one of the most important components in the integrated and multi-functional global transport strategy. Great results have been achieved in the business. The Drewry Shipping Consultants' "Annual Review of Global Container Terminal Operators 2006" ranked the COSCO Pacific as the 5th largest container operator in the world for its 3.7% global market share. By December 2007, the COSCO has invested in 30 terminal projects in various forms around China mainland, Hong Kong, Singapore, the US, Europe and the Middle East and the number of berths it owns has reached 146. In 2007, the total throughput of COSCO invested terminals has achieved 41.794 million TEUs with an annual growth of 19.4%.
