a) Increase the room temperature of the air conditioners and shorten the operation time

In order to save energy, the Company started to adjust the working hours of the air conditioners installed in the office building. Firstly, the operation time of the air conditioners were shortened: the air conditioners were set to commence operation at 7:30 am, one hour later than the original 6:30 am and the off-time was set 5 pm, one hour earlier than the original 6 pm. Secondly, the operation time of the air conditioners on Saturdays and Sundays were adjusted: all day operation was altered that Saturdays, off at 1pm and Sundays, off all day. Any operation or service-off under unusual circumstances shall be approved by the administrative department of the General Manager Office. Thirdly, the room temperature is increased: increased from 24℃ to 26℃, which greatly reduces the energy consumption. Compared with the same period in 2004, the saved air conditioner applied gas was 28860M3, decreased by 16.33%
.

b) Reduce consumption of office-applied paper and electricity

Office-applied paper and electricity consume the natural energy directly. By all the effective means, the Company tries to reduce the consumption of office-applied paper and electricity. In order to send the shipping documents such as manifests and cargo bills smoothly and rapidly, the mentioned documents shall be sent to shipping agency located at the unloading ports prior to the arrival of the vessels. EDI System was adopted in 1996, which, unlike mailed documents, can be scanned and sent in the form of emails, saving paper and accelerating the information exchange. Ever since 2003, IRIS-2 container service operation system has been adopted into the container shipping service, from consultation, entrustment and shipment to every arrival operation, conveying information and bills and greatly reducing the use of paper during the operation course. Since the 4th quarter of 2005, the Company has advocated the saving view of Self-consciousness and Focus on Trifle Things. All the staff is required to duplicate the document on both sides of paper and to reduce the waste of paper by diminishing duplication mistakes. Additionally, documents are required to be saved and conveyed in the electronic form to reduce the paper consumption. In the offices, it is required by the Company not to open the windows when the air conditioners are turned on, not to turn on the lights when the lighting is good and to turn the lights, computers and air conditioners off after the working hours. The lighting of the offices is control in centralization by the automatic control system of the building. Besides the facts that the administrative department of the General Manager Office coordinates with the property management company to shorten the occupied time of the lights in the offices and the escalators and that the sight-seeing lifts are turned on alternatively, the signs with “Turn off the lights conveniently” written on have been stuck beside all the switches. Compared with the same period of 2004, the electricity consumption of the building decreased by 113730KW.H, 11.30% by taking the mentioned measures.

c) Water consumption of office building

The water consumption involves all the water including that consumed by Haihuang Restaurant. All the urinals and lavabos were installed with automatic control system and all the staff was required to save on water in order to avoid water waste. The Energy-saving Management over the Office Building Regulations was formulated to pose regulations on reducing the water and paper consumption. In 2005, the average water consumption decreased obviously. In 2004, the total volume of consumed water was 32548 M3 and there were 817 people working in the building, average water consumption 39.83 M3 per person. In 2005, the total volume of consumed water was 30598 M3 and there were 852 people working in the building, average water consumption 35.91 M3 per person. Compared with the same period in 2004, the average water consumption per person reduced by 9.84%.
