General situation |
With the continual development of the social economy, people's awareness of protecting the natural environment is becoming increasingly stronger. COSCO makes efforts to build safe atmosphere, establish the philosophy of safety being the priority and harmonious development as well as guarantee the safety of life and property and the clear environment. At the same time, the group increases its efforts in environment protection, actively promotes the research and development and the introduction of environment protection technologies, develops the indicator of emission reduction and divide the indicators of the emission reduction into different levels for evaluation at the end of year. In this way, COSCO has made remarkable achievements in energy saving and environment protection.
■ Focusing on safety and environment management, COSCO Container Lines strengthens the safe operation and the environment protection. According to the actual situations of the management and requirements of laws and regulations, the company organized the departments in 2006 to identify and assess the environment factors and the danger sources once again, in a move to improve or evaluate the management proposals and management measures for material environment factors and important danger sources. In accordance with the regulations of the comprehensive management system, the company organizes the internal audit and the third-party annual audit conducting for the quality management system, the environment management system and the management system of occupational health and safe, and successfully passed the audit. In 2006, the company checked over 40 ships for the sake of safety with the correction of defects reaching 100%. According to the requirements of the state and COSCO, COSCO Container Lines prepares and improves its overall emergency proposal and specialized emergency proposals, in order to ensure that that company can rapidly make responses in case of emergent accidents/events, regulate the activities of emergency disposal, maximally avoid the degradation of emergent accident/events, reduce the damages or injuries and death of people in emergent accidents/events, protect the biological environment from being damaged and maintain the all-round, harmonious, stable and sustainable development of the society and the company.
■ Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering strengthens the collection normalization of the dangerous wastes. The dangerous wastes of the ship-building are mainly the waste paints and waste organic solvents. Since 2003, the company has been quantifying the adequate utilization of paints and solvents, taking the generation ratio of waste paints and waste solvents into the annual environment indicators for evaluation. The company originally put forward the specific and viable quantitative indicator - waste paint ratio and waste solvent ratio, which sets unified basis and standards for the evaluation of the discharge of dangerous wastes. Through the evaluation, the generation of the dangerous wastes is reduced, and on the other hand, the utilization ratio of the materials is improved significantly. More importantly, the on-site environment is improved substantially. After several years of efforts, the company's waste paint ratio and waste solvent ratio has been reduced from 0.0875 tons/1,000L and 0.0393 tons/1,000L in 2004 respectively to 0.072 tons/1,000L and 0.0372 tons/1,000L in 2006 respectively. It is learned that the two indicators are the first in China. |

| Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering has two domestic water processing stations. In order to reduce the emission amount of ammonia and nitrogen in the sewage and adapt to the requirements due to increasing employees, the company invested RMB400,000 in No.1 station in 2003 and RMB1.9 million in No.2 station in 2006 to reform the biological processing technologies. After the reform, the sewage processing capacity was increased from the original 480 tons per day to 1,080 tons per day, while the emission amount of ammonia and nitrogen was reduced by 3 tons per year and the discharged water can meet the standards. In addition, the company adopts the pneumatic grinder in order to solve the issue of industrial dust pollution of ships. Despite the working hours increase, the operating environment is fundamentally improved and the dust emission is reduced. In addition, the steel plates are pre-processed in the centralized zones to reduce the erosion area and degree of the steel plates during the staged processing; meanwhile, the company uses the Asia's most advanced open-top coating workshop to enable such operations as ball blast and spraying coating in closed, no-leaking and no-pollution conditions; as a result, the emission of dusts is controlled drastically. |
