| COSCO Group has been in active implementation and settlement of China's Energy Conserving Law, Detailed Rules for Transportation Industry to Implement Energy Conserving, and the State Council's Decision on the enhancement of energy conserving. COSCO's energy consumption consists of ship energy utilization and land-generated energy utilization, with the land-generated energy utilization only accounting for about 2% of COSCO's total energy consumption. Therefore, the ship energy conserving is the priority of the energy conserving task. |

■ Energy conserving
|
| In 2006, COSCO owned and operated over 700 ocean shipping vessels, consuming 4.08M tons of fuel oil and about 46,700 tons of lubricants. COSCO has conducted enough evaluation on the ship energy conserving technologies when building new ships and charting ships. In recent years, COSCO has been focusing on investing and reforming energy conserving. While a majority of the updated ship energy-conserving technologies have been fully applied by the company's ships, more efforts are put into the energy conserving by technology and management. At the same time, more money are invested to reform the technologies of existing ships, enabling the fuel oil consumption per unit to continue declining |

Actively promoting the application technology of electronic cylinder oil injector: For the traditional mechanical cylinder oil injector, the oil charge is in direct ratio with the rotation speed, while for the electronic cylinder oil injector, the oil charge is in direct ratio with the average effective pressure of the motors, which features timing and accurate oiling, precise oil charge, even oil distribution and reliability that can drastically reduce the waste oil discharge and the air pollution. MV Tianhou of COSCO Container Lines can save cylinder oil by 191.33kg per day on average and 55.80 tons per year, with the saving ratio of cylinder oil reaching 30%-50%. The technology, which was adopted by 17 ships of the group in 2005, was used by other 15 ships in 2006.
Applying Fuel Homogenization Technology: The Fuel Homogenization Technology refers to fuel milling. Big granules are milled into small granules and all the granules are fully combined to improve fuel burning efficiency and decrease pollution emission. COSCO Dalian installed the fuel homogenizers in VLCC and SUEZ MAX, which reduces the oil residues and shortens the working hours of oil purifiers and incinerators while improving the burning efficiency of the main machines and saving the fuel oil. Eight large bulk carriers of COSCO Qingdao including MV Tianronghai installed the fuel homogenizers, which can reduce the oil residues of fuel oil by up to 500 tons per year. Fuel homogenizer, which was adopted by 20 vessels in 2005, was used by other 19 vessels of COSCO as of the end of 2006.
COSCO Group has achieved remarkable energy conserving effect through technology transformation for mainframe turbocharger, border cutting for screw propeller, and oar fitting adjustment of old-aged ships, installation of PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins) and reasonably using fuel additives.
Both ship-building and ship-repairing business of COSCO actively respond to COSCO's energy conserving call. With energy conserving technologies being a priority, the latest energy conserving technologies are firstly used in new projects in terms of the energy supply, and energy conserving reconstruction is conducted for existing projects; natural gas is used to replace ehyne and propylene. Both ehyne and propylene manufacturing industries are typical high energy-consumption and pollutant industries, so replacing them with natural gas is of great significance to energy conserving, environment protection and sustainable development. In addition, Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) puts efforts in eliminating boilers, adopting overheat steam for centralized heating, replacing electricity-heated gasifier with air temperature spraying gasifier to conserve energy (spraying water uses the recycled cooling water of the air compression station to ensure the spraying effect); COSCO Shipyard Group applies the motor frequency conversion technology to all water pumps and fire pumps to effectively reduce the energy consumption; Guangzhou COSCO Shipyard builds small ovens in its electromechanical workshops that are used in case of small electricity engineering. This saves nearly 10,000 degrees of electricity per year given that prior to this the large oven would always be open no matter large or small electricity engineering. Dalian COSCO Shipyard innovates the billing method for diesel generators, equipping a fixed electricity power measurement box for each diesel generator. The electricity power measurement box is made up of electricity degree meter, electricity timer and current transformer with fixed proportions. All equipment that must be electrified for repairing ships are integrated to be provided with fixed off-shore power source, while other loads are connected with the diesel motor in order to improve the load percentage, reduce the price of the unit electricity and expenses. With this innovation, the expenses of each shift (refers to service fees, with a shift being 12 hours) drop from RMB1,569 to RMB1,052.24, down by RMB517.24 year on year; the oil consumption of each shift falls from 977.12L to 895.45L, down by 81.64L year on year. A total of RMB4.935 million are saved. Air compressor is the major equipment of electricity consumption for ship-repairing enterprises. Considering the actual situation of large energy consumption and low efficiency of several original screw air compressor, Nantong COSCO Shipyard bought and installed the most advanced centrifugal compressors with efficiency increased by 20% and annual electricity conserving amounting to about 1M KWH. |
