In 2002, COSCO was crowned as the "Year of Multinational Conglomerate" on the basis of the number of member units passing ISO9000 certification by China Quality Certification Yearbook; based on this, COSCO becomes China's first enterprise that passed ISO9000 quality management system standard, ISO14000 environment management system standard and OHSMS18000 occupational safety and sanitation management system. In 2006, COSCO's comprehensive management system passed the joint certification of DNV, CSS and the Auditing & Certification Center of China Academy of Safety Science & Technology, obtaining the certificates of ISO9000:2000 quality management system standard, ISO14000:2004 environmental management system standards and OHSAS18000 occupational safety management system and the certificate of modern enterprise management system.
COSCO and its key subsidiaries attach great importance to internal auditing, external auditing and management auditing, and strictly implement the auditing procedures. With the joint efforts of all on-shore and off-shore employees, COSCO's companies successfully passed the annual auditing of safety management system and security management system; the operation of the safety management system is being improved constantly, and the employees' awareness of safety risk and comprehensive quality have been improved significantly. In terms of energy saving, environmental protection and increasing the energy utilization, COSCO's all shipping companies and ship management companies established and passed the International Safety Management Code (ISM) issued by International Maritime Organization, set up safety and anti-pollution management systems; all ships pass the compulsory certification, while the shipping companies all passed the ISM certification before Jul. 1, 2002. All companies have obtained the DOC certificate with each ship boasting of the SMC certificate. As a global ocean carrier, COSCO has been actively supporting the anti-terrorism activities of the international maritime community. In recent years, COSCO has been proactively pushing and implementing a series of new laws including the amended SOLAS convention and the ISPS rules, with all ships obtaining the International Ship Security Certificate. On Jul. 15, 2002, COSCO submitted the application of jointing Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) to US Customs Service, and on Dec. 31, 2002, COSCO was officially approved by US Customs Services
