a) Values of CO2, NOx, SOx

By widely adopting satellite navigation, the optimum routes are selected, the economical speed is carried out and the sailing distance is shortened. By calculating the cost of the voyage number, the most economical speed is determined to reduce the fuel consumption. Through the “Dynamic Vessel Supervision System”, data such as the volumes of the fuel cabins, daily consumption and the days of consuming stored fuel are grasped to determine the arrangement of refilling time. By intensified supervision and examination over the volume of the stored fuel, the difference between the volume of the stored fuel and the actual figure is controlled within 5%. Control over returns of oil residue is strengthened, measures to reduce waste are implemented, unit consumption is controlled and the fuel consumption is reduced as possible. To reduce the fuel consumption, vessels, engines and equipment of high quality are put into use and the highest efficiency was obtained through sound management and maintenance. Reduction of fuel consumption is the basic measure of decreasing the exhaust gases such as CO2?NOx and SOx . In 2005, due to the increased number of the vessels and the expanded carrying capacity, the fuel consumption increased by 441337 tons compared with that of 2004. However, due to the reduction of the unit load fuel consumption, CO2 discharged volume was reduced by 143 kiloT compared with that of 2004.

b) Control over the vessel ballast water

To ensure the rotation of propellers at the proper depth in the water and to get certain propulsion efficiency, the draught of the vessel needs adjustment in accordance with the loading status to keep the balance of the vessel. Usually, sea water is pumped in or out of the cabins located at the bottom or on the sides of the vessel when cargo is unloaded to adjust the unbalance caused by cargo loading, or to adjust the draught demanded by the effective pushing force generated by the propellers in the case of idle load. The mentioned course is called bottom stowage, which might cause the water pumped in the vessel at one port or territorial water to be pumped out at another port or territorial water. There exist possibilities for the organic oceanic creature immigration that leads to disastrous results. For this reason, in 1997, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) issued the guidelines preventing the organic creatures from immigrating between different waters and in February 2004, a new convention was issued to control the ballast water and the sediments in it. The Company implements the mentioned guidelines and conventions seriously, setting up the Ballast Water Management Plan by which the ballast water can only be changed in abyssal areas, the ballast water must not be changed at ports, or the vessel shall be self-balanced by adjusting water within the self-owned cabins.

c) Disposal of the waste materials generated in the offices

The office building of the Company is located at the portion of the Huangpu River, opposite to Lujiazui and in the north of the Bund, becoming the head of the Shipping Street in Shanghai. The Company blends perfectly with the surroundings through the environmental protection of the office building. In compliance with the state and local laws and regulations relating the environmental protection, the waste water of the office building, the waste oil generated by Haihuang Restaurant on the top floor of the building and the daily garbage are disposed of carefully and properly. The waste materials generated in the building are disposed of by category of organic and inorganic. Categorized recycling disposal of harmful waste materials are in the charge of relevant departments. The Company coordinated the Property Management Company and Haihuang Restaurant to sign contracts with relevant departments on recycling the waste oil, waste fluorescent tubes and waste batteries. Standing book on recycling disposal of harmful waste materials was established. In 2005, the number of the recycled batteries increased obviously which helped prevent the corresponding pollution against the environment. Meanwhile, the Property Management Company and Haihuang Restaurant were urged to dispose of waste oil, waste water and waste materials properly and to reduce the amount of the waste materials as possible.
